Typhoon

A formidable tropical cocktail of gin, rum, banana, ginger, and lime.

Illegal to serve in many bars around the globe due to its formidable alcohol content, the Typhoon is “like a Dark and Stormy but far more dangerous” – and one of the most delicious things I’ve ever drunk. Born from the combined ingenuity of a close friend (who shall remain nameless) and myself, it’s a gently tropical drink: pleasantly sweet, with a strong ginger kick balanced by fruit and citrus. It’s far easier to drink than it has any right to be – despite its strength, it goes down like juice.

Caution: The legality is not exaggeration. Drink with care. Ideally, share.

Ingredients

  • Navy Strength Gin (2 measures) (The original used The Broadside by West Winds; any good navy-strength gin will work)
  • Dark Spiced Rum (2 measures) (Lemon Hart Blackpool, for preference)
  • Overproof Rum (1 measure) (Lemon Hart 151 was used to craft this recipe, but others do work well)
  • Banana Liqueur (1 measure)
  • Fiery ginger beer
  • Fresh lime juice (one half)

Method

  1. Combine all ingredients in a tall glass filled with ice
  2. Stir gently
  3. Serve

Optional garnish

Take the squeezed lime half and float it atop the cocktail. Pour a half measure of overproof rum into the half and set alight. Extinguish prior to drinking.
